20 Cents Makes Sense

Australia's Container Deposit schemes are a great recycling initiative but there are still too many bottles and cans being littered or ending up in landfill. That's why it's time to give people a better incentive to return their containers for recycling. 85% of Australians support increasing the refund to 20c, and so do we. It will mean more money back for your containers, more recycling, and less litter.

We are calling for two decisive changes to Australia’s CDS:

01

Increase the refund amount from 10¢ to 20¢

Increase the refund amount from 10¢ to 20¢ in all states and territories. This aligns us with high-performing international schemes and restores the incentive’s true value.

02

Commit to periodic reviews of the refund amount, indexed to CPI.

Commit to periodic reviews of the refund amount, indexed to CPI. This ensures the incentive remains effective over time and doesn’t erode with inflation.
